Having a well-manicured lawn is a great feeling, boosting your curb appeal and overall value of your home. However, many people are guilty of making a few common mistakes that can compromise the quality of your lawn. Thankfully, many missteps can be easily reversed!
Here are a few mistakes you could be making with your lawn care and some ways to fix them!
You take a shortcut by giving a short cut
Sometimes people cut their grass super short in the hopes that they can go an extra week without having to mow again. Unfortunately, this tiny shortcut for you can damage your lawn and weaken it because grass tries to balance their above and below ground growth.
To avoid throwing off the ratio, try to cut only one-third of the length of the blade.
Keeping your grass on the lengthier side will help contribute to a nourished and strong root system anyway so it’s a win-win!
Waiting on the weeds
Weeds are a lawn’s biggest annoyance, and if you let them build up, it will lead to headaches later. Instead of waiting for them to take over your yard and then treating them, utilize preventative measures:
- Pluck them as soon as you see them
- Aim for a grass height of about 2.5” to 3” inches high. (Cutting too short can make the yard susceptible to weed growth)
- Over-seed occasionally which will keep weeds from sprouting!
Overcompensating with water
It happens to the best of us: we get nervous that the grass is going to become dry and brown due to dehydration, so we overcompensate and end up watering daily.
Lawns require just an inch of water a week, so it’s better to do a more thorough soak a few times a week to really saturate the soil and strengthen grass, rather than giving it a little water every day that will run off and evaporate quickly.
Thankfully, many sprinkler systems run on a schedule, so your watering will be optimized, leading to healthier, more nourished grass!
